Country legend Willie Nelson will perform at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Friday, May 19 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets go on sale Saturday, March 11 at 10:00 a.m.
Mr. Nelson earned his first major record label deal in 1962 with Liberty Records after gaining recognition and respect for his song-writing talent of number one hits, “Four Walls” sung by Faron Young, and “Crazy” sung by Patsy Cline, along with other hits reaching the top 40 on the country charts. Performing for over forty years, Mr. Nelson’s hits include his traditional concert opener, “Whiskey River”, “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”, Funny How Time Slips Away”, “You Were Always on My Mind”, “On the Road Again, and “Night Life”, just to name a few. Mr. Nelson's albums, consisting of nearly 300 titles, including repackagings have sold millions. “Stardust” his 1978 cover collection of the pop hits of his youth, exceeds 5 million in sales, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Three others albums have sold 4 million copies each, along with two double-platinum albums and nine platinum albums.
Mr. Nelson is credited with several honors, among them admission to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1973), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1993) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2001). In addition to the six Grammys he has won for specific records, the Recording Academy (which confers Grammys) has also given him its Living Legend Award (1990) and Lifetime Achievement Award (2000). Mr. Nelson has been nominated for 43 Country Music Association awards and has won nine of them, including the entertainer of the year prize (1979) and the vocal event of the year trophy (2002) for his duet with Lee Ann Womack, "Mendocino County Line." That collaboration also won a 2002 Grammy, coming twenty years after his previous win.
Mr. Nelson co-founded the Farm Aid music festival in 1985 with fellow performers Faron Young and John Mellencamp. Its purpose was and is to raise awareness about and funds for America's family farmers. Nelson has co-headlined the event every year since its inception, except for 1988, when it wasn't held.
Mr. Nelson has expanded his fan base to a new generation since appearing in major movies such as “Wag the Dog”, “The Big Bounce”, “The Journeyman” and most recently in “ The Dukes of Hazzard” as Uncle Jesse.
Mr. Nelson’s band has played together over thirty years and consists of his sister, Bobbi Nelson on piano, Jody Payne on guitar, Mickey Raphael on harmonica, Bee Spears on bass guitar, Paul English on the snare drum and Bill English on percussion.
